Don't sleep!

The tapestry-makers of Saqqara have a lot of patience and concentration to be able to create those stunning artworks... well alright, sometimes they fall asleep... ;)

Prière à vendre/ Prayer for sale

@Carrefour

Reading Carrefour supermarket flyer "Leather and Fur Operation" from the terrace wearing skirt and t-shirt, sounds crazy but some people are already wearing coats and scarves here!

Old stuff - Vieux trucs

Relics in the "hanging church" dedicated to the Virgin Mary, coptic Cairo... it appears that there are real bones in there but not sure that they belong to the saints on the photos... o_0

Metro

The subway in Cairo is clean, cheap (1EGP per ticket or 0.13€ or 0.11GBP or 0.17US$) and two cars are only for women to avoid being groped when it's crowdy. On the other hand, at peak time, people are like wild animals to get in or out of the trains! Also you must stay calm when the guy at the ticket office tells you that you only gave him 1 pound for 2 tickets, it's the usual trick to make ends meet... Finally be aware that only a few expats take the subway, consequently don't be surprised if people point at you and laugh... Sometimes I wonder if it's written "fool" on my forehead, that would explain a lot!
"Maalesh" as they say here!

100

I like what they have inside their cars here, I never know where to look first: double coconut pin air freshener, embroidered tissu box or sheepskin dashboard?!? Other favorites include: soft dice toy, Mickey Mouse headrest wrapping, rosary hanging from rear view mirror or blue neon light ^^

In the end, Egyptians speak quite good English, especially when they want to sell you something! They even speak a bit of French and make up expressions like "français fauchés" (French are broke) !!!

I was in Luxor...

What I will remember of Luxor is that by visiting the temples and the tombs of the pharaohs, you won't witness a frozen history but the comings and goings of many civilizations. The Kings themselves would modify the buildings by adding or removing statues or erasing the name of the predecessor to write their in much bigger. Then the Romans arrived and took what they found interesting, after that the Christians transformed the temples in churches, then a bit later on the Arabs did the same and finally the "re-discoverers" carved their names in the stone! So much history!

eXcel Files luXor

Discovery of the ancestor of the Excel spreadsheet in the Karnak Temple, as I mentioned before (here), Egyptians from the Pharaonic era carved or drew as many Gods as ordinary scenes or inventories on the walls of their temples or tombs.

I can hear the bells!

Here is a pic that goes perfectly with an article I read yesterday and that I wanted to share. Unfortunately, it's in French :(
It's about young couples who get two minutes secret weddings so that they can have sex..! Real weddings are too complicated as the groom must have a lot of money to buy a flat and give presents to the bride and future in-laws. Plus, it's always good to try before buying ;)

Ka-Gmni

To unravel a hieroglyph's mystery is quite easy... with a guide!
Here, on one of Ka-Gmni's tomb walls, we can see the inventory of what should be buried with him to make his after-life easier. We notice a few birds heads, pottery and so on and above the symbol for the number 1000, the first symbol (in red on the pic) represents a condom!!! Yes, egyptians from the Pharaonic period used protection probably to control their descendants... after death!

Jesus!

Yesterday, I forgot to add that there are a lot of coptic sellers in the fabric market... this explains why kitsch carpets and tapestries are so successful!

Boulak

Gone for a stroll in the fabric market... this place is not really touristy consequently an expat with a camera is also a curious thing!

Nice illustration Road 9 in which all the expats will identify their "bawab" (sort of caretaker) or the woman who sells tissues by the exit of the grocery shop... though a critical dimension is missing to be a Banksy...

Xmas knick-knack are appearing slowly in Cairo... I mean at least in Maadi where there is a potential market to take thanks to the big expat community. It's a bit weird to start thinking about the holidays when it's still 25 to 30°C (77 to 86°F) everyday!
We'd better not forget our coats (and scarves and gloves and warm socks) when we go back to France end of December!

This morning, brunch with girlfriends at Grand Hyatt Hotel and amazing view over the Nile River :)))

samedi 6 novembre 2010

Chuuut! Shhh!

In Cairo, policemen and militaries are deployed everywhere in the city and in every touristic places... just in case. The problem is that not much happens and it's known that boredom and heat make you sleepy. Consequently this image is far from exceptional ^^

qott = chat = cat

It didn't take very long before we decide to adopt an Egyptian alley cat... and judging by its position on the couch 48 hours after its arrival, I don't think it is too disturbed by the change of address!

PyraMids (5)

After going down 55 yards, here we are within the Meidum pyramid... if you're not too claustrophobic, you'll be able to admire a piece of beam which is 4600 years old... the only thing they couldn't take away!
